SATURDAY SHOPPING ♥ SUN'S EYE OILS

SUN'S EYE OILS are a new discovery of mine...by accident. But I'm interested and thought I should share. Here's the story...I wanted to get some pure lavender oil to sort of scent some of my precious vintage, primarily my 1920s furs and 1960s minks and some of my favorite Glam Rock pieces as well as my hippy maxi dresses that look like Dawn doll heaven (that's to come!). I would have bought a huge bouquet of lavender or something like it except it's hard to find right by the beach. I figured the second-best option was pure oil. I have tried cedar and it doesn't really keep those moths away like I want them away. I stumbled into what looked like a candle shop, but saw a case of little bottles. These Pure Oils come in so many scents...a lot of them my favorites like pure vanilla and coconut. I seized one of the last to lavender bottles. It was only like $12 for a small glass bottle. Very reasonable for pure oils. I wanted to research them, though, to make sure Sun's Eye was truly pure oil and not synthetic. Upon going to the website, I did see a true dedication to pure oils along with some other fantastically interesting "potions". See below!

Herbal Essentials come in fantastic scents like ALMOND MUSK, COCO ROSE, LOTUS AND TULIP and VANILLA ORANGE.....

Pure Oils come in ALLSPICE, BAYBERRY, GRAPEFRUIT and everything NICE! Too many to list here!

Then we get to some of the more interesting oils they carry/sell....! I'm not some die hard woowoo person...but I've always been interested in lots of different things, including these kinds of mystical potions. First on the list of surprises was Sun Eye's MYSTIC BLENDS...with names like GARDEN OF DELIGHT, CLEAR MIND, GUARDIAN ANGEL AND VISION QUEST!

Then they also have GODDESS OILS and ZODIAC OILS, which might or might not speak for themselves. But what got me were the SPECIALTY OILS! DOVE'S HEART (to calm the soul...), DRAGON'S BLOOD OIL (empowerment, spiritual cleansing...etc), TRIPLE GODDESS OIL (balancing female energy) and WICAN ALTAR OIL! Enough said!

Listen, my theory is if you believe it, then it is. If you don't, then it won't. Maybe you're not into these oils for their mystical powers. Maybe you just like the scents. Maybe you know someone into these oils that might like them as a gift. I personally think a small company making these must seriously believe. My lavender oil smells strong and real. And I love the variety of what they carry. WAY TOO MANY TO LIST HERE. They also sell gorgeous little perfume bottles for your oils for around $24.♡

GIRL FRIDAY ♥ BUFFALO GAL (GIRL) STYLE 1

When I was a kid, coming home every day from school just to sit in front of the TV with the VCR remote control, waiting for the next rad thing to come on TV so I could document it, collage it, mood board a la video it, love it, preserve it...I can see that my obsession with fashion, pop culture and art has always been a huge part of who I am. I look at what I do now (magazine editor, art director, trend forecaster, culture/creative consultant) and then I look through my elementary school scrapbooks and the video "scrapbooks" and I realize I was doing then what I do now. :)

One style or term or fad which has always fascinated AND eluded me has been the BUFFALO GIRLS/GALS. Of course my first exposure was Malcolm McLaren's BUFFALO GALS song off his DUCK ROCK record. Yes the song is and was and will always be amazing. But what got me most was the styling of the girls dancing around in the video. From a tiny age, I thought McLaren was literally talking about those dancing girls with their "Buffalo Gal style". But years later, I wonder why no one really dresses like a Buffalo Gal. Why I've never seen any shoot or video or fashion trend quite capture the Malcolm McLaren video dancers. I'm doing some research on it. (Yes it's probably a branch of Hip Hop AND the New Romantics.) There's a much much older song that you might have heard in the lovely holiday film IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE called Buffalo Gals by John Hodges from the 1800s. They sing the song quite a few times throughout the film:

buffalo gals won't you come out tonight
come out tonight
come out tonight

I'm going to do this post like a collage I'd do as a kid...about what BUFFALO GAL/GIRL style is to me. I've been thinking about it for 20 years...at least. I think I have some idea of what it might be. Anyway...there's too much to cover in one post, so I'm breaking it up into parts.....this is part 1.

First...watch the Malcolm McLaren (do you know of his connection to Vivienne Westwood and Agent Provocateur?)...the girls appear straight from the beginning behind the kid pop-blocking. They're wearing really  maxi, cowgirl-like skirts and hats:

all that scratchin' is making me itch...UH HUH...
that's 1983 styling. and still killing it. i have to find out if Vivienne Westwood styled it.

dosey do your partner
so 1983.
buffalo gals

i Love that buffalo gal look...big cowgirl skirt. cap and a hoody and then that adam ant make up. LOVE. Even though they are kind of scary.

part 2 of this Buffalo Gal (Girl) Style post...and probably a few other parts, too....stay tuned. (Uh-huh.)♡

WED WONDER ♥ MARIE ANTOINETTE'S REAL DRINKING CUPS ♥

Marie Antoinette

Recently I was watching one of my favorite new TV shows (I don't really LOVE TV....but I do have my favorites on Bravo network as well as PBS stuff....I mostly watch YouTube channels and documentaries and old movies), Million Dollar Decorators which is an unbelievably well-produced show. On the last episode or so, one of the designers was at an artist friend's studio and started to talk about and fawn over a porcelain cup that was molded from a breast. The artist friend eventually explains to her that it belonged to Marie Antoinette, that she used to drink milk from it and that it was molded from her own breasts. Everything is true, EXCEPT the breast cups were not molded from Marie Antoinette's breasts at all. Here is the story taken from a couple websites credited below:

In June 1787, Louis XVI (MA's husband and King of France) surprised Queen Marie Antoinette with a gift - The Laiterie at Rambouillet. Inspired by Rousseau and a desire to return to nature, fanciful dairies were very fashionable among the aristocracy of Europe during the 18th century, but this dairy would surpass all others. As remarkable as the paintings, sculpture and furnishings that adorned the building itself were the porcelain pieces designed  to adorn the niches in the antechamber of the Laiterie of the Queen. Neoclassical in design, all of the pieces of the dairy service involved the storage and serving of milk and other dairy products, adhering to the theme of the pleasure dairy - a temple dedicated to milk.

Sixty -five pieces were delivered to Rambouillet in two shipments in 1787 and 1788. Marie Antoinette may have only seen the pieces in the first delivery.  Included the 1788 delivery were a set of four Breast cups made for drinking milk from. Famous today because the cups are said to have been molded from the Queen's own breast!

one of the original breast cups that Marie Antoinette drank milk from.
another original breast cup/bowl
And here is a reproduction you can purchase online here !
a reproduction of Marie Antoinette's breast cup! that you can buy!

This is not true as the Dairy and all of it's furnishing and decorative arts was to be a surprise to the Queen. The ideal was the kings but his architects and decorators tuck over with the design and planing. Nevertheless the famous Sèvres porcelain cups are two-part tasting bowls, designed for Marie Antoinette to partake of the farm's fresh milk

The cup is in the shape of a breast painted flesh colored with a pink nipple at the bottom. The porcelain breast rest in a Greek style tripod with the head of goats terminating in hoofed feet. The late 18th century Sèvres breast cups makes reference to the traditional Greek mastos cup (from mastos = breast, udder) itself modeled on a breast!

Pretty amazing. I love it. The designer on the show actually told her artist friend to leave her the breast cup when he dies ("...will you put it in your will?) I mean, it's amazing enough that I might have asked the same thing!

TUESDAY TAILOR ♥ VERSACE...FOR H&M!

I didn't see this Versace for H&M thing coming. I don't know why. A few years ago, I had a friend who was average height and very thin...and she used to buy Versace for juniors...so the dresses were gorgeous but mini. I don't know if they still make that young line. Come to think of it, it was quite a while ago. But if they do make a teenage/younger Versace range, I'd go for that before I went for the H&M collab. I like seeing the collections....but I never rush and buy these pieces because ultimately, it's just not going to be the same as the actual designer brand. That's just my opinion. But let's see what Donatella (love her) has in store for us. And, as a bonus, I've also included the new Versace Mens Spring Summer 2012 show for y'all to check out. I haven't watched it yet, but I am sure it's also gorgeous. Donatella is doing a great job. Come on...you know she is.♡

MAKEUP MONDAY ♥ SUNGLASSES MAKE UP

I will post part 2 of the Becca cosmetics review (part 1 is here)...but I had to do a post with one of my favorite YouTube make up gurus, Ruth Crilly of A Model Recommends (her YouTube and blog name) because this new video she just did recently is a) GORGEOUS, b) useful and c) again so gorgeous it could easily be a photo story in a magazine. Just see for yourself. She is killing it here! And yet she is so cool and real that you cannot hate her for being so damn pretty. You gotta love her. :) PS Don't forget to notice her EEK! nails...the same ones I wrote about from the Giles Deacon show last year.♡

SUNDAY MATINEE ♥ MENS FERRAGAMO 2012

A year or more ago, I wrote about how men's fashion would be getting extreme....going back to the days when there was more to a male wardrobe than some pants, shorts, a button-up, T-shirts and sneakers. Those days have arrived. I've only watched a couple of the menswear shows so far, but it's already been amazing to see how fashion-y all the collections are getting. I feel, for probably one of the first times ever, that the men's shows are stacking up next to the women's collections....or getting very close. Take a look at the Salvatore Ferragamo Men's Spring/Summer 2012 show which was overseen/designed by Massimiliano Giornetti...who is also now in charge of the women's collection. I love his name and I appreciate and love his vision. I am sure I'll be cooing over some of the other menswear collections during this week (Prada, ahem). But take some time and have a look at this show. If I was a dude, I'd be STOKED.♡

SATURDAY SHOW ♥ CELINE PRE-SPRING 2012

THANK goodness Phoebe Philo lightened up a bit. I do love everything she touches. And I do love Céline and what she's done with the house. But the famous Phoebe buzz has been a little weak the past couple of seasons and I think one of the main reasons was that her collections might have been, dare I say it, a bit too sophisticated. This Celine Pre-Spring 2012 collection still feels very Céline....but it's very very young and fun, a nod to her Chloé days in a way. Especially with the model and her unkempt rocker hair.♡

i love it and i am sure those shoes will sell out.
this is so strange. i mean, i love it. but it looks like she got squooshed in the middle? but so fun compared to the other celine collections, non?
a bit witchy woman with the belt. but i think that's why i like it and why it makes it phoebe...
really LOVE this outfit. minus the gloves, you could wear this out in a second. you could also copy it with your own pieces. ;)
cool girls like to dress up outfit.
this is totally my style anyone who knows me will say the same thing. i don't believe i have to show everything to feel and look sexy. and i am a bit of a tomboy like phoebe. love this outfit. and the whtie shoes. see how well white shoes look with everything?
if this doesn't look gorgeous and french then i don't know what does. love that bisque color with the black. LOVE! it's the belt and the gloves that take it somewhere else, though. probably the shoes, too. almost a bit nina ricci, right?
cute. there's that hot celine cabas you can read about here.
another witchy woman outfit that i LOVE.
i love this so much.
witchy woman outfit numero 3. but i love it anyway.
this was pretty funny. i mean, this is the humor i was missing in the past celine collections philo worked on. THIS is fun fashion. have fun.

GIRL FRIDAY ♥ ROCHAS GIRLS

I think artistic director (weird title...shouldn't he be the Creative Director of the house?) for Rochas, Marco Zanini, has such clear vision for what he's doing. Season after season, he's been able to really continue telling the Rochas story...in his own way. And that's not easy to do (please see the Pucci collection...I am a HUGE MASSIVE Pucci fan...but I can't say I see Pucci when I look at the collections the past couple of years....as it looks more like a play on Cavalli than Pucci. Oh well...but I've made my point). It's still so chic. It's so fun. It's very Japanese almost. And the styling is amazing. For the Rochas Pre-Spring 2012 collection, they've styled the model (Julia Shvets) so so well. Actually, she is styled almost exactly the way a stylist I know does herself up. She even looks like her. I can't remember her name because it's been so long (but I will get the name as soon as I get my magazines out of storage), but she styled Yoko Ono for our shoot and my interview when I was with Oyster. She had the same braided wreath around her head and was very Greek goddess in her simplicity. And very chic. I'll find out. She was adorable. But back to Rochas. I can't get enough of Marco Zanini. I love the way he and also Sergio Zambon see young women and spring dresses. :) And I can't wait to have my next gig where I can where their clothes all the time!♡

love! though i'd wear heels with it. or little flats. but i like the look for editorial.
chic chic chic. would love to be wearing this entire look for work! including the hair!
love. i'm loving all black again so so much.
love!
separately i'm sure all of these are amazing. it's kind of funny for a look. but it makes for good editorial.

love his version of le smoking.
gorgeous print. very japanese looking. the look,  i mean.
gorgeous color!!
